Omaha - US Olympic Trials - Day 5 Prelims: Lochte, Phelps, Hoff and company look to add events to Beijing schedule

With the US Trials now halfway over, familiar faces look to add more to their burgeoning Olympic schedules. Lochte, Phelps, Hoff, Coughlin and Peirsol are all on tap for tonight's semi-finals.

Women's 100 Freestyle

The top 16 is littered with past and present Olympians. We got our first taste of 41-year old Dara Torres who posted an impressive 54.57, and was only one of two women to take the race out under 26 seconds. Natalie Coughlin (53.64) leads the field however, in a time that is only 3 tenths above her American record. She was out a few one hundredths slower than Torres but then absolutely scorched the back 50 metres to finish a half second ahead of second place finisher Lacey Nymeyer (54.06). It would be foolish to count out Katie Hoff as well tonight. 16th place is 55.43.

Men's 200 Backstroke

Aaron Peirsol leads the field into tonight in a very controlled 1:57.05, slightly ahead of Nick Thoman (1:57.33) and Tyler Clary (1:57.60). Waiting in the wings however is Ryan Lochte (1:58.25) who looked like he was warming down from the event instead of actually swimming it. 100 metre backstroke finalist David Plummer is the cut-off man at 2:01.09

Women's 200 Breaststroke

Rebecca Soni's 2:24.65 leads the field of women into tonight's semi's. 3rd place at the moment is 3-time Olympian Amanda Beard (2:26.86), who has also competed in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM this week, but has yet to qualify for Beijing. Soni and Beard will go head-to-head tonight in the second semi-final in what should be a contrast of styles. Soni's stroke rate this morning was much higher than Beard's. Should be an exciting race as the youngster will try to knock off the defending Olympic champion in this event. Other notables are 2007 Pan Am champ Caitlin Leverenz (2:27.41) and newly anointed 2-time Olympian Megan Jendrick (2:28.42). 2:31.34 rounds out the field.

Men's 200 IM

Ryan Lochte was back in the pool again to capture the top spot in 1:59.49. 2 tenths behind is the familiar face of Michael Phelps. Going in 3rd is Alex Vanderkaay who is quietly having a great meet, having previously made the final in 200 butterfly and 400 IM. 8th spot is Clark Burckle (2:01.61), brother of Caroline, who made the 4X200 freestyle relay last night and in 16th is Austin Surhoff (2:02.60), son of B.J., of baseball's Baltimore Orioles among others. All eyes should be on Lochte and Phelps however as the two fastest performers in history look to add this event to their Beijing schedule.
