Weber-Gale Lowers American record under 48 for the first time, as 2 records fall
US Trials-Day Four-Prelims Recap

Heading into the halfway point of the US Trials, two American records were set in the prelims as Weber-Gale takes the 100 under 48.

Men's 100 Free

It was another one-two punch for records this morning as Garrett Weber-Gale (LAST), in the second seeded heat, broke the American record set by Jason Lezak (ROSE), in the first seeded heat. Lezak lowered his own record from 48.17 to 48.15, then Weber-Gale dove in and destroyed it, touching in 47.74-the first time an American has been under 48 and a lot closer to the World Record set by Alain Bernard of France earlier this year.

Not one to shy from a challenge it looked like Michael Phelps (CW) might lower it again in the final heat, but he came up a tad short with his 47.92, which was good enough for lane 4 in the first semi-final, however he scratched the event to ready for his 200 fly final tonight. The swim will be sufficient to make him a serious player on the 4x100 free relay in Beijing. Also in that semi will be Ryan Lochte (DBS) who was 48.88, Nick Brunelli (SDA) who is looking to make his first Olympic Team with a 48.74 and 100 back silver medalist Matt Grevers (FORD) in 48.63.

In the second semi look for Ben Wildman-Tobriner (STAN) to challenge Weber-Gale, he swam a 48.59 this morning. It took a 49.73 to make top 16, and 26 men were under 50 seconds.

Women's 200 Fly

Elaine Breeden (STAN) is the top qualifier in 2:07.72. She was a surprise 2nd in the 100 fly, but this is her best event having won it at last year's NCAAs. Mary Descenza (ABSC) was second in this heat at 2:09.65. Descenza is one a handful of swimmers racing in TYR. She comes off a gold medal win and an American record in this event at the 2008 Short Course Worlds. She is also only the second woman (behind legendary Mary T. Meagher) to win the 200 fly all four years at NCAAs.

World Champ silver medalist, Kim Vandenberg (BRUN) swam a solid 2:09.37. She has the final of the 200 free tonight, which fortunately, falls ahead in the schedule of the semi in this event.

Men's 200 Breast

Brendan Hansen (LAST) cruised to top spot with his 2:11.29, splitting: 29.31, 32.96, 33.77, 35.25. He will be hunting down his American record tomorrow night, but as he noted after the 100 final, he is quite happy to peak at the Olympic Games this time around.

Scott Usher (BA) who is the local hero sits in second with a 2:11.41-he was second in this event in 2004. If Hansen and Usher go 1-2 again, the men's breast events will mirror 2004 for the US team. Clark Burckle (LAKE) training partner of Ryan Lochte and brother of Caroline Burckle who was 4th in the 400 free, sits in 6th spot with a 2:12.86
