GROVE CITY, Pa. - The Washington & Jefferson College men's and women's swimming and diving teams had a record-breaking three days at the 2006 Presidents' Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Grove City College.
The W&J women finished in second place, while the Presidents' men earned third. Washington & Jefferson saw 16 student-athletes win conference championships, including three conference record-setting performances. W&J also shattered eight school records and had seven student-athletes make NCAA Division III Championship qualifying standards.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Orstein (Mt. Lebanon, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) topped all of the W&J performances after being honored as the PAC Women's Swimmer of the Year for the second-straight season. Orstein claimed three individual titles and qualified for the national championships in all three events. She also led four relay squads to conference titles, including two which reached NCAA qualifying standards.
Orstein took PAC titles in the 200 (2:05.19) and 400 (4:28.94) individual medley events as well as the 200 backstroke (2:07.54). The 200 backstroke time set school, conference, pool and invitational records.
She also teamed with junior Brandi Shoupe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and freshmen Susanne Seward (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) and Alicia Sutton (Erie, Pa./McDowell) to win the 200 (1:38.20), 400 (3:35.87) and 800 (7:55.40) freestyle relays. The 200 freestyle relay made the NCAA-qualifying standard, while the 800 relay smashed the previous school record.
Orstein and Seward joined sophomore Kristen Mastropietro (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) and freshman Ashley James (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) for the winning 200 medley relay which qualified for the NCAA Championships (1:49.33).
Mastropietro earned two conference championships after winning the 100 (1:05.72) and 200 (2:25.78) breastroke events. Her time in the 100 breastroke set a new PAC record and both of her victories qualify her for the national championships.
Freshman Daniel Mancuso (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) led the men's squad as he captured two conference titles and set four (three individual, one relay) new school records. Mancuso won his conference crowns in the 400 IM (4:14.06) and the 500 freestyle (4:42.32). In the 500 freestyle, Mancuso broke the conference record which had stood since 1982. He also broke a school record during his second-place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:57.31).
Freshman Eddie Werner (Severna Park, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) notched a school record in the 200 backstroke (1:58.15) after placing fifth.
Werner, Mancuso, senior Matt Socha (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and freshman Zach Nigrelli (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) also now own the 800 freestyle relay school record (7:05.58). The foursome placed third in the championship event finals.
