Dutch Team for the European SC Championships

The Dutch Swimming Association has announced it's team for the upcoming European short course Swimming Championships taking place in Riesa, Germany.

Chantal Groot and Johan Kenkhuis, both swimming for the professional swim team in Amsterdam, will lead the 14 members strong squad. Groot was the 50 fly LC bronze medallist at the European LC Champs in Berlin this summer. Kenkhuis is the Dutch record holder in the 50 free, 21.47, a time he set last year at the European short course Championships in Antwerp.

Other swimmers from Amsterdam are Ewout Holst, who ranked 6th in the 50 fly at the World Championships in Fukuoka and Thijs van Valkengoed, triple European Junior Champion in the breaststroke.

Bastiaan Tamminga swam a Dutch record in the 50 backstroke last Saturday, 25.05, to make the team. Flyer Stefan Aartsen, a semi finalist from the Sydney Olympics, will start in this event in Riesa. PSV swimmer Mark Veens has returned from a shoulder injury; at the 1999 World SC Championships he won the bronze in the 50 free.

Gijs Damen and Jeroen van der Berkt will complete the men's freestyle relay, to help the team defend its silver medal from last year.

Inge Dekker the fourth place finisher in the 50 butterfly at last years European SC Championships in Antwerp will compete in both the 50 and 100 butterfly events in Riesa.Breaststroker Madelon Baans a semi finalist at the Sydney Olympics will compete in the 50 and 100 meter events at this Chamionships.

Suze Valen a 50 back semi finalist from the SC Worlds in Moscow will compete not only in the 50 back but also in the freestyle sprint events. Swimmers Marleen Veldhuis and Annabel Kosten will join the Dutch team on the relays.

Newly appointed National Team Coach Andre Cats will accompany the Dutch team to Riesa.

The Philips swim team with Pieter van den Hoogenband, won't be participating in this years event. They decided to swim the World Cup meets this winter, with a training camp in Australia at the beginning of December. Dutch Olympic star Inge de Bruijn is preparing for the Barcelona World Championships and will begin competing again on the European leg of the World Cup Circuit in January.
